The Aetherians emerged from a millennia-long cyclone on the gas giant Aethoria around 100,000 BC—one of the oldest sapient species in the known universe. Native to the Andarion Galaxy, they developed FTL travel in 12,600 AD and have since spread across 30,000 worlds and 70,000 orbital habitats.

Biology

Standing five feet tall with semi-translucent, bioluminescent skin, Aetherians possess four arms ending in fingers that can extend fifty percent beyond normal length. Their bodies are marvels of atmospheric adaptation: honeycomb bones for buoyancy, aerogel-like tissue that is ninety-nine percent gas-filled, and the ability to absorb nutrients directly from atmospheric gases.

Most striking is their chromatic communication. Aetherians convey complex meaning through shifting skin colors—blue for intellectual discourse, red for passionate debate, purple for authority. Three subraces stratify Aetherian civilization by atmospheric layer. The Alighwolders inhabit upper altitudes, dominating leadership and philosophy. The Boulfwolders occupy middle layers, driving industry and resource management. The nomadic Talige move freely between all strata, serving as explorers and spiritual guides.

The Sovereign Synod governs through “Cosmic Consensus”—a blend of democracy, meritocracy, and collaborative decision-making. Their core values emphasize adaptive integrity, harmonic coexistence, and the profound potential within empty space.

Aetherian technology carries a secret its creators only discovered after centuries of failed transfers to other species: it unconsciously channels Primordial Essence, the quasi-sentient cosmic force underlying all magic.
